Can I use Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan is restricted to CURRENTLY enrolled students, faculty, and staff at Texas State University.  If you are not currently affiliated with the university, please contact your nearest public library for interlibrary loan services.

How can I tell which items are owned by the Library?

Since ILL assists researchers in obtaining copies of items that the Alkek Library does *not* own, you'll need to use these tools to determine which items are already here at the Alkek Library:

Periodical List

  •   This is the most complete list of the Library's electronic subscriptions.
  •   It lists periodical titles (& years of coverage).
  •   Online/e-titles are linked and can be accessed from home or inside the Library.
  •   To check the availability of periodical titles in print format, please consult the library catalog.

Library catalog
Locate book, serial, periodicals in print format, and a/v titles in the Library.

How soon will I get the item?

Normal turnaround time for documents to be received by ILL is approximately 3 to 7 days while difficult to locate items may take longer.

Where do I pick up & return items?

  • Electronic delivery:
If you selected electronic delivery in your ILLIAD account, then electronically received periodical articles are sent to your ILLIAD account. Log into ILLIAD and retrieve them online within your ILLIAD account. However, sometimes articles are NOT sent from lending libraries electronically. Thus, electronic delivery is not always possible.
  • Print based items:
Printed versions of periodical articles and books and media are picked up at the Circulation Desk. Items that must be returned (such as books and media) are also returned to the Circulation Desk or the Interlibrary Loan Book Drop located near the photocopy machines on the 2nd floor.
  • After hours:
Items can be picked up at the Circulation Desk.
  • RRHEC students:
Students currently enrolled at RRHEC may request ILL items be delivered to RRHEC for pick up. Students must indicate RRHEC as the delivery location within ILLIAD - otherwise all items are sent to the Alkek Library. Please contact RRHEC Library services for additional information 512-716-4700.

How long can I keep the item?

Most libraries lend materials for two weeks, and renewals may be requested -- but it is the prerogative of the lending institution, not the Alkek Library, to grant renewals. Please request an extension several days before the material's due date.

What if I have overdue material?

A notice is sent to patrons with overdue ILL material. If the item is not returned within one week from the date of the notice, the patron's ILL privileges are suspended and a hold is placed on the patron's circulation record. Until the material is returned, or paid for, the patron is unable to check-out materials from the Alkek Library, register for classes, or obtain a transcript. The patron is responsible for all charges assesed by the lending library.  Having excessive incidences of overdue items will result in the permanent revocation of Interlibrary Loan privileges.

Do I need to find out what library owns the book or journal I need?

No. ILL determines which library(ies) to contact in order to borrow the items. However, you will need to know that the TxState Library does NOT own the item you are requesting.

Why do I pick up my items at the Circulation Desk instead of the Interlibrary Loan office?

As the central check out point for the library, the circulation desk is staffed all hours the library is open and it is a more centralized location.  Interlibrary Loan staff work Monday through Friday from 8a.m. to 5p.m. but may be temporarily unavailable while performing work duties.

How can I contact the Interlibrary Loan office?

The Interlibrary Loan staff is available for consultation between the hours of 8am and 5pm Monday through Friday.  You can set up an appointment or ask for assistance at either the Circulation or Reference desk while you are at the library and someone from Interlibrary Loan, if available, will meet with you.  You can always contact Interlibrary Loan directly by calling 512-245-4893.

How do I renew checked out items?

Renewals are done by logging in to your ILLiad account.  Please remember that renewal requests MUST be done at lease three (3) days before the due date.  There is only one renewal request per item allowed.

Can I request books that are in the Wittliff Collections?

Material housed in the Wittliff Collections cannot be requested through Interlibrary Loan.  It can be accessed by visiting the Wittliff Collections on the seventh floor of the Alkek Library.

Can I get my textbooks through Interlibrary Loan?

We do not recommend requesting textbooks. If you do request your textbooks, please be aware that if we are able to get them, you MUST RETURN THEM BY THE DUE DATEWe do not set the due date.  It is set by the lending library.  You can request one renewal (if allowed by the lending library).

How do I access the Faculty Article Delivery Service (FADS)?

The Faculty Article Delivery Service (FADS) is a service offered to current faculty.  All FADS requests are submitted through your ILLiad account.
