Finding Periodicals

Module Three: Gathering Information

Information Literacy Tutorial Main Menu

Databases pageWhat are Databases and Indexes?

Indexes

  • Come in print format
  • Cover various subjects
  • Can look up articles by subject
  • Provide the article citation (more on citations here)
  • Once you have collected citations, you can work on locating the articles with the citation information provided
  • Some indexes cover specific subject areas
  • The newest editions of indexes are usually softcover pamphlet type books

Databases

  • Are online versions of indexes
  • Because they are online, they often have more features
  • "Full-Text" means the article is linked electronically so you can access the article immediately
  • Databases resemble search engines and you can use some of the same search behavior.
