February 9, 2009: New Library Exhibit, Honoring Anton Bek
Anton Bek: School of Music Pioneer" is a new exhibit in our display case, honoring the career of Anton Bek (1908-1990). Mr. Bek came to the university in 1945, at a time when the School of Music barely existed. (Indeed, the Bachelor of Music degree was briefly eliminated in the early '50s.) He championed the school's re-emergence and founded the Stage Band. Facing a lack of funding, he took it upon himself to create dozens of scores for the band to play, transcribing recordings by hand (and by ear). A few of these manuscript pages are on display, along with photographs and other documents from his long and legendary career at Texas State. Many of our faculty still remember him today for the varied roles he served (conductor, arranger, violinist, teacher, and mentor). The exhibit will run through August 8, 2009. July 15, 2008: New: Music CAREERS Collection
The library received a $3,000 grant to start a new Music Careers collection at the library, and we unveiled it today! We have assembled an up-to-the-moment collection of books that will address a common question among college musicians: "What am I going to do with my life after college, and how might music fit into it?" There are 150 books in the collection, and we will be adding to it as new titles are published. Items are library-use-only, so that the title you need will always be here.
April 10, 2007: New Leisure Reading Collection
Our library has become even more fun! We now have a collection (130 titles and growing) of general-interest books, fiction and non-fiction (all subject areas--not just music). Any of these items can be checked out for 2 weeks.
Please note: we are seeking (gently-used) donations. You can come by and leave them with a library desk clerk anytime we're open. Thank you for thinking of us!
