Whereas: Texas State University is proud to now have over 29,000 students and one of the
highest ranking public institutions in the state; and
Whereas: Texas State students are excited about the growth of our university and the resources that it provides them to be successful after their collegiate career; and
Whereas: With the academic growth of the university it is essential that we continue to meet the needs of our peers; and
Whereas: The Albert B. Alkek library is one of the largest academic libraries in the state of Texas; and
Whereas: There are no adequate establishments that offer students a place to study throughout the night in San Marcos and surrounding areas; and
Whereas: It is important for the University to provide their students with the opportunity and tools necessary to succeed; therefore
Be it resolved: With the proposed library fee increase of two dollars per credit hour the Albert B. Alkek Library of Texas State University launch a pilot program to gauge if a 24 hour library would be feasible for the students and university alike; and
Be it further resolved: That this pilot program start toward the beginning of the spring 2009 semester and last no less than one month; and
Be if further resolved: That upon research of the data collected from the pilot program permanent funds be allocated to support the appropriate increase in library hours beginning in the fall semester of 2009; and
Be it further resolved: That upon its passage this legislation be sent to ASG advisors, Vincent Morton and Kathy Weiser, Vice President for Information Technology, Dr. Van Wyatt, Assistant Vice President, Joan Heath, Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Joanne Smith, and University President Dr. Denise Trauth.
During the pilot project the library will work with student workers, library guard and patrons to gather feedback and data in the following areas:
Building Use: The library guard and student workers will gather information during the pilot reguarding the number of people on each floor, number and types of questions, and the areas used e.g. study areas and/or computer usage.
Student/Patron Feedback: We will also gather student/patron feedback about the pilot reguarding hours, study areas, noise, services, and other issues that come to light during the pilot.
Alkek Library will submit the final report to the Vice President of Information Technology, C. Van Wyatt by the end of May 2009.
