Born in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, in 1938, Lázaro Blanco studied architecture and physics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, and science and physics education at the University of Michigan and SUNY. Blanco has worked as a teacher since 1964. In 1966 he joined the Photographic Club of Mexico — his first experience with photography. By 1968, he was Coordinator of the International Photography Pool for the XIX Olympic games in Mexico City. That same year he began his career at the photographic workshop of the Casa del Lago, UNAM, which he continues to the present day. Over the years he has also worked as a critic, exhibitition curator, writer, and, of course, photographer. His photographs have served as illustrations in numerous books and have appeared in magazines such as Camera (Switzerland), Zoom (France), Life en español, and books such as Contemporary Photographers, Family of Woman, and Seven Mexican Portfolios. He has participated in exhibits in Mexico, the U.S., Latin America, and Europe. He has written museum catalogs for scores of exhibitions and has won awards for his art criticism as well as his photography. He is a founding member and first Vice-President of the Mexican Council of Photography. He lives and works in Mexico City. The Wittliff Gallery is proud to own fifty-three Blanco prints so far.
