Jesse Herrera earned his B.A Degree in 1975 in Art and Design from the University of Illinois at Chicago and an M.A in photojournalism from the University of Texas at Austin in 1990. He documents the people and folkloric traditions of remote areas of Mexico, his native homeland. His most recent work encompasses religious celebrations in Spain and Guatemala, which parallel and contrast those in Mexico. His work has been exhibited throughout Texas and the Midwest in one-man shows and national juried exhibits. Most notable among these are: The Seventh Annual New American Talent Exhibit, The Magic Silver Show, and Arte Sagrado. In addition, some of his work has been featured in various publications dealing with Hispanic culture. Borderlands, Texas Poetry Review, and Art and Ritual in Golden-Age Spain (Princeton University Press, 1998) are the most recent books featuring his photographs. A selection of his work is in the permanent collection of the following institutions: The Wittliff Gallery of Southwestern & Mexican Photography, The Center for American History, The Harry Ransom Humanities Center of The University of Texas at Austin, and The Mexican Fine Arts Center and Museum at Chicago. Herrera lives in Austin. The Wittliff Gallery is proud to house examples of his work.
