Cataloging & Metadata Services Units

Expand All Content
  • This unit catalogs and processes continuing resources (periodicals, e-journals, and databases). Any items awaiting processing in this unit have the status IN CR UNIT in the online catalog.

  • This unit works to maintain the quality and accuracy of various library databases, particularly the online catalog, with the goal of linking data between these databases when possible. One of the tools for this database maintenance is authority control, which involves standardizing the forms of names or subjects in records and creating cross-references from variant forms of these headings. This work helps library users to find all the resources by a particular author or on a particular subject with one click when searching the catalog.

In addition, DMS works to provide increased access and exposure for our library data and resources with initiatives exploring linked open data. DMS collaborates with other units to investigate how crosswalking and transforming metadata can benefit workflows, as well as enable better discovery and access for users.

Any items awaiting processing in this unit have the status IN PROCESS DMS in the online catalog.

  • This unit catalogs and processes monographic materials for the University Libraries. Books, E-books, streaming media, DVDs, software, sound recordings, models, kits, maps and atlases are just a few examples of the types of material processed by this Unit. Any items awaiting processing in this unit have the status IN CATALOGING in the online catalog.

  • This unit catalogs most materials destined for the Music Library as well as selected music materials housed in Alkek. Formats include books, musical scores, compact discs, DVDs, software and streaming audio. Any items awaiting processing in this unit have the status IN PROCESS MUS in the online catalog.

  • This unit catalogs materials located in The Wittliff Collections. This includes Southwestern Writers Collection, Southwestern & Mexican Photography, and Lonesome Dove Collection. Aside from the previous collections mentioned, the unit is also responsible for cataloging most of the materials located in Special Collections, which are primarily located in The Wittliff Collections and the ARC. The unit also assists in the encoding of archival finding aids and minor preservation activities. Any items awaiting processing in this unit have the status IN WC CAT UNIT in the online catalog.
