What is GIS

2018 GIS Day Map Competition

The GIS Services at Alkek Library in partnership with Society for Geographic Information Science (SOGIS) announces this year’s GIS Day map competition.


Apply GIS to create a map about any topic of your preference and present it in a poster. Topics could range from real issues to imaginary ones. Contestants could submit modified maps presented in previous GIS or related courses.

Who may enter: All registered Texas State Students

Poster Specifications: Size – 36" (width) by 24" (height); Format – PPTX, PDF, JPEG, PNG.

Judging Criteria

The maps will be judged based on Design/Layout (organization & balance), Legibility & Visual Appeal (text font/size, color coordination & use of symbology), Effective communication (understandable & efficient use of techniques and data), Accuracy (grammar & spelling), and Originality (unique presentation).


  • 1st Place A certificate, a 128 GB High Speed Flash drive and other gift prizes.
  • 2nd Place A certificate, a 64 GB High Speed Flash drive and other gift prizes.
  • 3rd Place A certificate, a 32 GB High Speed Flash drive and other gift prizes.
