Raúl Ortega was born in Mexico City in 1963 and studied photography at the Casa de las Imágenes in his home town. He has been a professional photographer since age 23, working for La Jornada from 1986-2000 and as editor of its supplement foto from 1998-2000. He has also worked with news agencies Reuters, AP, and AFP. His accomplishments have been recognized by the Mexican Association of Photojournalists and by numerous photographic biennials in Mexico. He has exhibited his photos domestically and internationally in approximately 60 individual and group shows. Ortega’s images have been published in books, periodicals, and newspapers and are found in museum and private collections. His image of Subcomandante Marcos, taken in the Lacandón jungle in Chiapas in 1995 has become the signature image of that famous Mexican revolutionary figure. Since 1998, he has been a member of the Council of the Mexican National Biennial of Photojournalism. He lives and works in Mexico.
